What is MRI? MRI means Magnetic Resonance Imaging. World wide it is the latest device for diagnostic imaging.
| |
Why is it necessary
?
Unlike other procedures, it enables the radiologist to view slices of the body cut in different planes. This increases his diagnostic ability.
| |
How is it done ?
The patient is made to lie down on a table. This table then passes through a tunnel within a machine. Inside the tunnel it is bit noisy when the images are made. Yet the patient can hear the voice of the radiologist or the technician and can respond. While the patient lies within the tunnel, pictures of the body are taken from different angles. These pictures can be seen on a computer screen. The whole procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes. During the course of the procedure the patient may be given an injection of a substance called contrast medium.
| |
Why the injection
?
The injection (contrast medium) helps to show up the part of the body under examination with clarity. Administration of this injection enables the radiologist to make more precise diagnosis.
| |
What the patient should
tell the Doctor ?
The patient should volunteer information to the radiologist if he has ailments like asthma, heart or kidney disorders, history of allergy, or a previous reaction to contrast media. It is important for the radiologist to have this information so that he can choose a contrast medium suitable for the patient.
